The ChamplainBall with Live Music By The Baltimore Consort

One of the highlights of the Champlain Quadricentennial will be The Champlain Ball, taking place at the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge on Saturday May 16 at 8:00 p.m. The style of dancing will be authentic social dance popular in France and England during the 16th and 17th centuries, the age of the renaissance. Some of the classic French renaissance dances programmed will be the allemande, branle, and pavane. Also included on the program will be some "Old Measures," dances popular in Elizabethan England, as well as some early English country dances popular in Scotland and France during the Jacobean period. The dances come in all shapes and sizes: processional, circle, and longways sets. What they share in common is that they are meant to be enjoyed!

A Saturday afternoon dance workshop, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m., also at the Elks Lodge, will precede the Champlain Ball. Both workshop and ball will be led by dance-master Michel Landry of Montréal. Michel Landry is a noted dance historian, as well as a performer of historical and international folk dance. He has been teaching monthly classes in French and English renaissance dance in Plattsburgh and Montréal to help prepare the period-dance community to commemorate the Champlain Quadricentennial in authentic period style.

Live music for both the Champlain Ball and the afternoon dance workshop will be provided by none other than The Baltimore Consort. The renowned early music ensemble has been delighting audiences on both sides of the Atlantic for over 25 years and, with fifteen exemplary recordings on the Dorian label, was recognized as "Top Classical Crossover Artist" by Billboard Magazine. Cost to attend the dance workshop is $10; the ball is $15; to attend both is $20. No partner is necessary; singles and groups are all welcome. Some previous experience, even just the afternoon workshop, is suggested. Spectators are also welcome. Fancy period or contemporary dress is requested for the evening ball, at which refreshments will be provided. The Elks Lodge, overlooking Lake Champlain, is located at 56 Cumberland Avenue in Plattsburgh, New York.
